House Lockout in San Jose

Locked out of a Willow Glen bungalow, a Cambrian ranch or a North San Jose apartment, opened without a mark on the door

The same three calls come round every week. A bungalow on Minnesota Ave where the screen door was pulled shut behind someone taking out the bins, and the mortise key is on the kitchen table. A fourth-floor unit off North First St where the fob still opens the lobby but the apartment deadbolt does not care about fobs. A ranch house in Cambrian Park whose knob set has been locking itself on a spring latch since 1958 and finally caught someone out. Calls are answered at any hour, the whole figure is agreed while you are still on the phone, and a text with the technician's name, photo and a thirty-minute window lands before the van leaves.

San Jose doors fall into three families and each opens differently. Open: your ID or lease is matched to the address before a tool comes out, the lock is opened, the bolt is run through a few cycles to be certain nothing inside was bent, and payment is card or tap at the threshold with an itemized receipt by email. Twenty minutes is the citywide average. It is not the average on a Sharks night around the SAP Center, or at half past five when 101 and 280 are both crawling, and on those evenings the window in your text says so instead of quietly running late.
