A shop, an office suite or a warehouse door that will not open at six in the morning, with the right person's authority checked first

Business lockouts run to a schedule the rest of the trade does not see. Six in the morning at a restaurant on Santana Row, where prep should already have started. Seven at a warehouse door off Zanker Rd, with a lorry idling outside and a driver on the clock. Eight on a Monday at a suite on North First St, where the person with the key left the company on Friday. And the awkward one: a shop on Lincoln Ave where the door locked itself behind someone taking a delivery, and the till, the alarm panel and the phone are all on the wrong side of it. Any of those is answered at any hour, with the figure agreed before a van moves.

These are not house doors and the method is different. A storefront glass door usually runs an Adams Rite style deadlatch in a narrow aluminium stile: it is opened through the gap between leaf and frame, and half the time the reason it stuck is a closer that stopped pulling the door the last half inch rather than the lock at all. An office suite door on a building master runs a mortise or cylindrical lock, which picks. A warehouse man-door often carries an exit device inside and a cylinder outside, and the honest answer there is sometimes to go in through another opening and release it from within. Before any of that, authority is checked: a business card with the address, a lease, a utility bill, an alarm-company password, or the owner on speakerphone. Anyone who opens a commercial door without asking that question will open yours for the next person too.

What speeds it up is knowing what you have. On the call: glass in an aluminium frame, a solid door with a lever, or a roller shutter with a separate padlock; is there a closer on it; is the alarm live and do you have the code. An itemized invoice in the business name goes out by email the same day, which is what a bookkeeper needs and what much of this trade will not produce. Twenty minutes is the average across the city, and if a lorry is blocking your only loading door, say so — that moves you up the queue for the same reason a locked-in child does.
