Programming a fob is the job people most often try themselves first, and often that is the right call: a fair number of cars have an owner-manual procedure that takes two minutes and costs nothing. Where it stops being a DIY job is anything with a rolling code that has to be enrolled through the diagnostic port, any car that needs the existing keys present to accept a new one, and every push-button car, where the fob is the immobiliser credential and not just a remote. The first thing you get on the phone is which of those your car is, including when the answer is that you can do it yourself in the drive.

The other half of this job is the hardware. Fobs bought from marketplaces fall into three groups: genuine, quality aftermarket, and cases with a chip that no tool will speak to. The third group is not rare and is the reason people arrive at a workshop having already spent money twice. So a fob you supply is checked for compatibility before it is programmed — part number, frequency, chip type against the car — and if it will not work, you are told before the fee is charged, not after. Where a case has simply worn out but the electronics are fine, the board and the chip can often be moved into a new shell, which is cheaper than a new fob and takes about the same time.

Key fob programming is $102 to $189. A straightforward enrolment on a common car sits at the bottom; push-button proximity fobs, cars that need a longer procedure, and jobs where the blade also has to be cut run to the top. The $89 visit is inside the figure; between 8pm and midnight the $102 job reads $142, overnight $177. If the fob turns out to be one that cannot be programmed to your car, only the visit is charged rather than a full fee for work that could not be done.

Two practical notes. Batteries first: a fob that has to be pressed hard, works at one metre but not at five, or works on cold mornings only, is usually a battery or a worn contact rather than a lost pairing, and that is a two-dollar answer worth trying before a call-out. And second, if you are adding a fob because one went missing, ask for the missing one to be deleted at the same time. On most cars the old credential keeps working unless it is removed, which means a lost fob in a car park is still a key to your car until somebody takes it out of the list.
